Milan close to signing Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana

Milan are close to completing the signing of midfielder Youssouf Fofana from Monaco in a deal worth around €25million (£21.3m, $27.4m).

The 25-year-old France international will sign a four-year deal with the option of an extra year.

The Athletic reported in June the central midfielder had come under consideration at Manchester United, but it was unclear how serious or advanced United’s interest had become.

If the deal is completed, Fofana will become Milan’s fifth summer signing, following the arrivals of Alvaro Morata, Strahinja Pavlovic, Alex Jimenez and Emerson Royal.

Fofana joined Monaco from Strasbourg in January 2020 and made 175 first-team appearances for the club, scoring seven goals.

The midfielder featured in six of France’s seven matches at the 2022 World Cup, starting in the semi final victory over Morocco and coming on as a substitute in extra-time of the final defeat to Argentina, replacing Adrien Rabiot in the 96th minute.

Fofana played in three Euro 2024 matches as a substitute, including in the quarter-final victory on penalties against Portugal.
