Vital Energi has signed a five-year contract to support a £250m heat decarbonisation programme at London Gatwick Airport.
The Blackburn-based energy specialist will work across 50 buildings at the airport, including both North and South terminals, to eliminate natural gas usage and enhance energy efficiency. The contract is part of Gatwick’s plan to reach net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
Under the deal, Vital Energi will deliver low-carbon heat technologies, including heat pumps and new heat infrastructure, while improving operational resilience. The airport plans to generate its own energy on site.
Cedric Laurier, chief technical officer at London Gatwick, said the airport aimed to become the first major UK hub to generate heat on its premises. “As we continue to grow, we must do it sustainably. Our work with Vital Energi will play a critical role in this,” he said.
Mike Cooke, managing director at Vital Energi, said his firm’s in-house engineering team would deliver the design and installation work required to meet the airport’s net-zero commitment.
The scheme aligns with wider efforts across the aviation sector to decarbonise by 2050.
