Bayern Munich close to agreement with Alphonso Davies over new contract

Bayern Munich are close to an agreement with Alphonso Davies over a new contract.

The Canada (CANMNT) captain’s existing terms with the Bundesliga club are set to expire at the end of the season leaving him free to speak to overseas clubs.

But after months of talks only a small gap remains between Bayern and the 24-year-old left-back’s expectations on a proposed four-year deal.

Real Madrid and Premier League clubs are still waiting in the wings but a compromise is now likely to be struck that will see him stay at the Allianz Arena.

Davies joined Bayern from Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019 and has since gone on to make 218 appearances for the club.

During his time in Germany he has won the Bundesliga title on five occasions and was pivotal in their 2020 Champions League triumph.

Davies has made 23 appearances in all competitions for the club this season. He has scored one goal and has added three assists.

He has also played three times for the CANMNT but was withdrawn from the squad for the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals with Suriname in November as a “precautionary measure due to physical fatigue.”

In his absence Canada advanced 4-0 on aggregate and will meet Mexico in the competition’s semifinals in March.

Davies is next expected to be in action when Bayern host Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
