Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer faces race to be fit for Champions League quarter-final second leg

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer faces a race to be fit for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan.

Neuer, 39, has been recovering from a calf injury sustained in early March and will not be fit in time for tomorrow’s first leg tie, while Kingsley Coman is also injured.

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said he hoped both Neuer and Coman, who is out with a foot injury, could return for the return leg of the last-eight tie in Milan on April 16.

“The squad is developing daily,” Kompany said in a press conference. “I hope they will be there for the second leg, but I don’t want to put any pressure on them. There’s no guarantee.

“We’re looking ahead and assuming that the guys who play tomorrow will be able to perform and get the result for us. We can’t forget that the guys tomorrow have all been involved in our journey so far to where we are. I don’t want to moan about things. I don’t want to change my goals because we’ve got injuries. My thoughts are just about what can happen when we perform to our best.”

Jamal Musiala will also be absent for the game at the Allianz Arena after he sustained a hamstring injury in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga victory over Augsburg on Friday.

German international Musiala, 22, suffered a hamstring tear and is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks. He was replaced by Thomas Muller, with the veteran forward announcing last week that he will leave Bayern at the end of the season.
