We took stock of the 2025 high school recruiting classes for all 16 teams in the new look Big 12 ahead of a busy month of official visits in June. Let’s reassess that progress with one thought on each program while the summer dead period continues.

Arizona

The Wildcats have the third-lowest average player rating in the league, but the program did get a much-needed influx of recruits as first-year head coach Brent Brennan added 15 commits in the month of June. Seven of those hail from Texas — clearly a concerted effort for the new Big 12 members — including three-star running back Wesley Yarbrough, the top-rated commit in the class. Zona also flipped in-state cornerback Dajon Hinton from Arizona State.

First-year wide receivers coach and former NFL All-Pro Hines Ward is already paying dividends for Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils. On the heels of landing a commitment from four-star, top-200 prospect Adrian Wilson in April, Hines led the charge on June commits from three-star wideouts Cameron Dyer and Cory Butler. Dyer, who plays quarterback for La Cueva High School but will come to ASU as a receiver, was named New Mexico’s 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year after tallying 55 total touchdowns during a state championship run.

Baylor

Baylor is pushing for a turnaround with head coach Dave Aranda back pulling the strings on defense. The Bears added some much-needed speed to the secondary last month with in-state commitments from hybrid safety Bo Onu and cornerback Leo Almanza, both of whom are high school track standouts. Onu ran the 100 meters in 11.38 seconds as a junior, and Almanza posted 22.04 seconds in the 200 meters this spring.

BYU is bringing up the rear in terms of per-player average rating, but the Cougars added a massive commitment atop the class last month in four-star, top-400 recruit Lamason Waller. The rangy 6-foot-2 wide receiver from outside Los Angeles was a priority target for BYU and picked Provo over offers from a slew of top-tier schools in the SEC and Big Ten.

Adding length has been an emphasis for head coach Scott Satterfield after a disappointing first year in the Big 12, which was reflected in the measurables of Cincinnati’s June commitments. The Bearcats added high-three-star wideouts CJ Crite (6-1) and Mikkel Skinner (6-3), in-state linebackers Paul Nelson (6-2) and Terrell Holcomb (6-3), cornerback Jordyn Woods (6-3), and offensive linemen Jahari Medlock (6-6) and Jeremiah Kelly (6-3 with 33.5-inch arms).

The Buffs and Deion Sanders added only two commits last month, but Colorado also has the third-highest average player rating in the Big 12. And one of those two commits was a big one: Chauncey Gooden, a four-star, top-400 prospect out of Nashville who projects as an interior offensive lineman. Gooden chose CU over a list of finalists including Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon and Tennessee.

Huge month for first-year head coach Willie Fritz, who added 11 commitments in June to push the Coogs into the top half of Big 12 recruiting rankings. The crown jewel of that hot month was Demetris Dean, a four-star, top-400 offensive tackle. Houston has shown an ability in the past to win in-state recruiting battles, dating back to Ed Oliver, and Fritz’s ability to reel in elite Texas recruits such as Dean with some degree of regularity will be paramount as the program continues in the Big 12.

It was a relatively quiet month on the trail for Iowa State and head coach Matt Campbell, adding five commits. Three-star running back Ryver Peppers was the highest rated of the bunch, choosing the Cyclones over Big 12 rival Kansas State. ISU also landed three-star defensive lineman B.J. Carter out of Florida, a state that has produced some impact players for the program in recent years, including quarterback Rocco Becht, receiver Jayden Higgins and recent defensive lineman transfer Kenard Snyder.

Half of the Jayhawks’ 10 commits in June came on the same day — Father’s Day, June 16. All five recruits play defense, including high-three-star linebacker Kenyon Rivera out of Georgia’s Buford High School. Despite having the league’s second-lowest average player rating, Kansas also added a headliner with an in-state commitment from Juju Marks, a four-star, top-400 offensive line prospect.

After a solid run in June, the Wildcats hooked a whopper on July 1 with a commitment from five-star tight end Linkon Cure, a top-30 prospect who would be K-State’s highest-rated high school signee of the 247Sports era. We wrote about the program’s pursuit of Cure last month, and Kansas State delivered during a late-June official visit. The 6-foot-6 recruit from Goodland, Kansas — on the opposite side of the state from KSU’s Manhattan campus — is a massive recruiting win for head coach Chris Klieman.

The Pokes beefed up the defensive trenches with a trio of defensive line commitments from Michael Riles, Jordan Covington and Alexander McPherson. Riles is the highest-touted of the bunch, a four-star, top-350 prospect from Port Arthur, Texas, and the second-highest rated commit to Oklahoma State’s class behind four-star quarterback Adam Schobel.

No one in the Big 12 has had a better summer on the recruiting trail than the Horned Frogs, who reeled in four four-star, top-400 prospects over the course of a month. It started on the last day of May with a commitment from Chad Woodfork, a 6-foot-4 edge rusher from outside of Houston and near top-100 recruit according to the 247Sports Composite ratings. The run ended with a commitment from four-star cornerback Micah Strickland, a top-150 recruit from Brownsboro, Texas, who measures 6-feet tall with a 6-foot-6 wingspan.

Let’s give some flowers to Texas Tech assistant Justin Johnson. The Red Raiders wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator (nicknamed “Coach Juice”) has had some big recruiting wins in his two seasons in Lubbock, most notably five-star wideout Micah Hudson from last year’s banner class. In 2025, Johnson has a hand in commitments from a pair of four-star, top-400 in-state receiver prospects — Tristian Gentry last fall and Bryson Jones last month. Jones, a 6-foot-1 target out of Frisco, Texas, also logged 11.56 seconds in the 100 meters earlier this year.

The Knights are currently eighth in the Big 12 recruiting rankings for 2025 but have the league’s highest average player rating. That mark got a bump in recent weeks thanks to commitments from a pair of high-three-star in-state prospects: cornerback Rukeem Stroud and wideout Carl Jenkins Jr. Stroud, a 5-foot-11 prospect out of Tampa, flipped from Wisconsin to UCF, where he joins wideout and high school teammate Santonyo Isaac, a fellow 2025 recruit.
Utah

Nine of 11 2025 commits over the past month play defense. The linebacking unit in particular got a boost with commitments from Christian Thatcher, Cyrus Polu and Max Fonoimoana. Thatcher is a four-star, top-350 prospect from Las Vegas who picked Utah over Colorado, Kansas and Washington. Polu is an in-state pick-up, and Fonoimoana, who can also play as a rush end, is a legacy recruit, the younger brother of safety Brock Fonoimoana and grandson of former Utes quarterback Bill Cravens.

The Mountaineers dipped down into Florida for four commits in June, with offensive coordinator Chad Scott and assistants Bilal Marshall (RBs) and ShaDon Brown (DBs) making some serious in-roads in the Sunshine State. Running back Deandre Desinor is the top prize from that haul, a four-star prospect out of Delray Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale. The 5-foot-9 spark plug should fit nicely into West Virginia’s run-heavy offense.
