Bournemouth's Alex Scott suffers fractured jaw after 'very violent' Tyrone Mings elbow

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott will undergo surgery after suffering a broken jaw in a clash with Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings on Saturday.

Scott, 21, went down six minutes into the 1-0 defeat, after he attempted to latch onto a slack touch from Mings, before the defender’s right elbow made contact with the face of the Bournemouth player. Scott received lengthy treatment on the pitch, before also going down in a clash with Amadou Onana, and he was substituted at half-time.

A statement issued by Bournemouth on Sunday said: “Scans have since revealed a displaced fracture and Scott will undergo surgery to stabilise the jaw.

“He will miss the remainder of the season and have the full support of the club and its medical team throughout the recovery process.”

Mings did not receive a booking following the incident, though Villa team-mate Jacob Ramsey was sent off after receiving his second booking on 80 minutes, as he fouled David Brooks.

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola told BBC Sport after the match that Ramsey’s challenge in the 80th minute was “not a second yellow”, but felt Mings’ elbow on Scott was “very dangerous”.

“Tyrone Mings knows what he is doing, he knew where Alex was. It was very violent,” Iraola said. “The value of a red card in the sixth minute or the 80th minute is very different. He sees Alex coming and for me, it is very dangerous.

“He was almost knocked out. After the elbow, we didn’t know if he could continue. He wanted to continue but he was not 100 per cent. It (was) a very violent elbow.”

Ollie Watkins’ goal in first-half stoppage time saw Villa rise to sixth in the Premier League table, four points off second-placed Arsenal ahead of their match against Liverpool on Sunday.
