College Football Playoff 2024 projections: Notre Dame is back! Tennessee is out!

Hello, and welcome to my weekly College Football Playoff bracket. I’ll be updating every week based on new results. They are based solely on my opinions and likely will differ from Austin Mock’s much smarter, scientifically based projections. Also, be sure to check out David Ubben’s Bubble Watch every Monday.

Texas A&M’s impressive win over LSU, coupled with Notre Dame’s 51-14 rout of previously undefeated Navy, left me with quite a conundrum in this week’s projections. I dropped the Irish from the field last week because I don’t see them winning out. But, if the Aggies also finish 10-2 (let’s say with an unexpected loss but a big win over Texas), the committee can’t take them but leave out a team that beat them at home in Week 1 … right?

Mandel’s Final Thoughts: QB decisions loom for top-10 teams in Week 10

In going through SEC schedules, I realized Tennessee by season’s end may face only four teams that finish .500 or better (Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and Vanderbilt), of which I have the Vols winning two (Alabama and Vandy). I had to drop them out.

BYU, which looks better and better by the week, is now my projected Big 12 champ and the only Big 12 team in the field. Iowa State’s resume will be thin if it doesn’t win the league.

And I’m finally jumping full bore on the Oregon bandwagon, because frankly at this point I’m skeptical Ohio State is going to make the Big Ten title game. In fact, with its offensive line in shambles, it may lose this week at Penn State.
