  1. Alligators, also called gators, are large reptiles and apex predators in the Crocodilia order in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae.
  2. The word alligator probably comes from the Spanish word “el lagarto”, which means “the lizard.”
  3. There are two species of alligators: the American and Chinese alligator.
  4. Alligators first appeared about 37 million years ago.
  5. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) can be found from southeast Oklahoma to east Texas, North Carolina, and Florida in the United States, particularly in freshwater habitats like swamps, marshes, and rivers.
  6. The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is native to eastern China and is one of the most endangered species of crocodilians in the world. There are fewer than 120 Chinese alligators left in the wild.

  1. Female alligators can lay up to 60 eggs at a time in alligator nests that they construct by piling vegetation and mud together. The temperature of the nest plays a crucial role in determining the sex of the young alligators that hatch from the eggs.
  2. Alligators are opportunistic feeders, and their diet consists of various small mammals, birds, small fish, turtles, insects, and reptiles.
  3. Breeding season starts in late June or early July, and the eggs hatch around August and into September.
  4. Baby alligators are born with a series of egg teeth that fall out shortly after hatching. These teeth are used to break through the tough shells of their eggs and are not replaced.
  5. Habitat destruction, egg collection by humans, and poaching for skin and meat are one of the biggest threats to alligator populations.
  6. The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is another species of large reptile found in the southeastern United States and parts of Central and South America. They are closely related to alligators but not the same.
