Fenerbahce head coach Jose Mourinho has been handed a three-match ban and fined 292,500 Turkish Lira (£5,975; $7,699) by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) after pinching the nose of his Galatasaray counterpart Okan Buruk.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager appeared to pinch opposite number Buruk’s nose after the final whistle of Wednesday’s Istanbul derby at Sukru Saracoglu.
Four players were dismissed in stoppage time as Galatasaray won the game 2-1 to advance through to the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup.
Mourinho was also shown a red card by referee Cihan Aydin after full-time following the incident with Buruk but has now been handed further punishment from the TFF “due to his unsportsmanlike conduct towards an opponent”.
“Mourinho shall be banned from entering the dressing room and the bench for three official matches,” the TFF statement read.
The 62-year-old will miss Fenerbahce’s upcoming Turkish Super Lig games against Trabzonspor, Sivasspor and Kayserispor.
The incident wasn’t the first controversial situation Mourinho has been involved in this season, his first in Turkish football.
Galatasaray threatened legal action against the Portuguese over accusations he made “racist statements” towards their bench following a goalless draw between the two rivals in February and “derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people”.
Mourinho was later handed a four-game suspension and a £32,000 ($42,000) fine after saying “if a Turkish ref had refereed this match, it would have been a disaster”.
During a September game against Antalyaspor, Mourinho placed a laptop, showing a still image of an offside decision he believed had been unfairly given against his side, in front of some pitchside TV cameras.
Fenerbahce — second in the Turkish Super Lig — return to action against Trabzonspor on Sunday. They are currently six points behind league leaders Galatasaray, who have played one game more.
