Morgan Sindall crushes rivals in August contract league

Morgan Sindall won significantly more work than any of its rivals last month after signing for 32 jobs worth a combined £362.6m.

The UK’s second largest builder would still have topped the monthly contract league table even if it had not won its largest project — a £120m south-west London residential scheme, which its subsidiary Morgan Lovell will deliver with Sutton Council.

Excluding the 290-home development, Morgan Sindall’s project value averaged just £7.8m — seven times less than any of the other contractors in the top five, according to data compiled by construction intelligence firm Glenigan.

The contractor topped the monthly league table for the first time since March 2022, despite it winning more UK construction work by value than any other contractor last year after taking on 330 projects worth £2.44bn.

Mace seized silver medal position in the August league table after winning four jobs worth a combined £240.4m, including the £117.8m Vinegar Yard mixed-use redevelopment by London Bridge station.

Mace had previously been lined up to deliver a £200m, 20-storey tower on the site but the plans were scaled back in 2021.

Third place position was shared by Northern Irish contractors Lowry Civil Engineering and Woodvale which — working as a joint venture — won the largest construction contract awarded in August: the £375m Strule Shared Education Campus.

The project will see the companies build six schools catering for 4,000 students on a former military site in Omagh, County Tyrone. The 567,000 square metre campus aims to improve community relations by providing shared facilities for each of the schools.

Lendlease landed fifth place in the August league after being appointed as main contractor for the £150m expansion of Crystal Park Football Club’s Selhurst Park stadium in south London. The project will create an extra 8,000 seats at the venue, taking the total number up to 34,000.

July’s league-topper McLaren made a reappearance in the top 10 after signing three projects worth £112.3m. Last month the Canary Wharf-headquartered contractor won two jobs, including a £400m data centre build in Silvertown, east London.

Morgan Sindall solidified its lead at the top of the league table covering the past 12 months, having won 301 jobs worth a combined £2.75bn between September 2023 and August 2024. Last month the contractor had won £825.3m more construction work than its nearest rival, Winvic, in the preceding year. However, its lead now stands at £1.1bn.

Multiplex and ISG each snuck up a place to take third and fourth place in the yearly league table respectively, as Bouygues fell from third to sixth position.
