New Mexico State offensive coordinator Tyler Wright was not with the team for Saturday’s game against New Mexico as the school investigates decade-old, derogatory social media posts, university officials confirmed to The Athletic on Saturday.
The Las Cruces Sun News reported Friday that Wright had more than 150 posts on Twitter/X from 2011 to 2014 featuring derogatory language about Africans, Black Americans, Hispanics and members of the LBGTQ+ community. Wright played for Tarleton State at the time.
As of midday Saturday, the posts had been deleted, and his first publicly available post goes back to September 2023.
The Sun News also reported that in 2020, Wright tweeted during the George Floyd protests, “Humans are humans regardless of skin color or background and deserve to be treated as such. We must do better, support each other’s goals and love one another.”
He also posted a black square that June, part of a widespread social media protest against racism and police brutality.
Wright joined the NMSU staff as tight ends coach in 2022. He was promoted to offensive coordinator this January under new head coach Tony Sanchez.
New Mexico State lost 50-40 to New Mexico on Saturday, falling to 1-4.
