RED Construction Group has been appointed by Infrastructure Investments Ltd to deliver a £31m student accommodation redevelopment in Shoreditch, east London.
The appointment follows the completion of £1.8m of enabling works by RED’s Special Projects division.
The main contract will be undertaken by RED Construction London and is scheduled for completion in autumn 2025.
The scheme, known as Willen House, will see the building’s area expanded from 4,370 square metres to more than 6,500 square metres through a major refurbishment and structural alterations.
The project, designed by ECE Westworks, aims to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
It will involve extending the building from six to eight storeys and installing a new facade with high-performance windows and glass-reinforced concrete cladding.
The upgraded accommodation will house 208 student bedrooms across seven floors, supported by communal areas and two ground-floor commercial units.
RED Construction said its appointment reflected the high standards demonstrated during the enabling works.
Mark Iori, managing director of RED Construction London, said the growing demand for student accommodation was “certainly influencing” the firm’s workstreams.
Steven Gardner at Infrastructure Investments Ltd said the project’s inner-city location required a main contractor with experience of complex sites, and praised RED’s previous delivery standards.
RED Construction Group said it is currently delivering more than £75m worth of student accommodation work across its London, South West, and Special Projects teams, involving more than 500 beds.
The company’s experience in purpose-built student accommodation is matched by work in the hotel sector.
RED Construction South West recently completed the UK’s first branded net-zero hotel, the voco Zeal Hotel at Exeter Science Park.
