Sizewell C seeks £70m contractor for access works

Sizewell C Ltd has launched a tender to build a transport and logistics hub needed to enable construction of the £20bn nuclear power station in Suffolk.

The contract, valued between £50m and £70m, covers works to enhance access to the Temporary Construction Area (TCA) on the Sizewell C site.

Construction on the scheme, known as North Plaza, is scheduled to begin in November and complete within 12 months.

The North Plaza will include separate interchanges for external and internal bus services, along with dedicated parking for site buses, visitors, staff and heavy goods vehicles.

The contract scope includes site preparation, installation of duct routes, and construction of hardstanding areas, footways, crossings and security access tracks. The plaza must be illuminated and delivered to a compliant, operational standard.

Contractors are also expected to align their delivery with Sizewell C’s environmental, social and governance goals.

Elements outside the scope include the Pass Office, freight security building, and a number of water, telecoms and substation facilities elsewhere on the site.

Interested firms must submit expressions of interest by 16 April.

The new infrastructure forms part of enabling works for Sizewell C, which received a £1.3bn government commitment in early 2024 to support early-stage construction.

Once operational, Sizewell C is expected to generate 3.2GW of electricity, enough to power six million households for more than 60 years.

It was granted planning consent in 2022, although campaigners insisted they would “continue to challenge every aspect” of the project.

Earlier this week, Galliford Try and Breheny Civil Engineering secured contracts to deliver major off-site infrastructure works for the Sizewell C nuclear power station.

These road packages include a £100m-plus scheme to build the 6.5km Sizewell Link Road and the 1.8km Two Village Bypass, awarded to Galliford Try, and a contract to construct two roundabouts on the A12, let to Needham-Market-based Breheny.
