We are about halfway through the group stage of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, so there’s still a ways to go.
The 12 teams in the tournament are split into four groups. This is a Group C contest.
Group A: Australia, Greece, Canada, Spain
Group B: France, Germany, Japan, Brazil
Group C: Serbia, South Sudan, Puerto Rico, United States
Each team plays three games in the group stage — they will all have played two by the end of this South Sudan vs. USA game. After the third game, the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals, along with two of the three third-placed teams. That’s right: eight of the 12 teams will advance, and it will depend partially on point differential.
The quarterfinal matchups will then be determined by a random draw, with the two highest-seeded teams automatically placed on opposite ends of the bracket. Teams from the same group cannot be drawn against each other. From there, it’s single elimination leading up to the gold-medal game on Aug. 10.
