SEATTLE — In a disturbing scene, New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera was taken off the field via ambulance in the ninth inning of a game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Cabrera seemed to have injured his left foot running home from third base while tagging up on Aaron Judge’s bases-loaded fly ball to left field with the Yankees ahead 10-5.
Cabrera avoided the tag from catcher Cal Raleigh, passed home plate and planted his feet to reverse course to tag the plate. But he appeared to twist his left ankle in the process. After he touched home plate and scored the run, he fell to the ground in clear pain.
Yankees trainers immediately rushed to his aid, one of them embracing him while he lay on the ground atop home plate. Other medical personnel tended to his left foot while teammates and manager Aaron Boone watched.
An ambulance came from the outfield and Cabrera was loaded onto a stretcher. He was then driven off the field. The crowd cheered when he was loaded onto the stretcher and when the ambulance left the field.
Oswald Peraza moved to third base to take over for Cabrera. Jorbit Vivas went to second base.
